Here's a coin from Thailand, a country known for tin deposits--hence a natural place to make coins from this metal. Tin is a normally corrosion resistant, durable metal until below 13C, at which point it gradually converts to the "gray tin" allotype shown here. If you look closely, you'll see how the normally smooth coin fields have been distorted, possibly during conversion to the gray allotype. The detail shows the brittle, crumbly nature of this material. If I tried to bend this coin, it would probably snap into many pieces. Obviously, tin is not a good choice for coinage in colder regions.

Of course--if anyone has any more info or corrections, by all means let me know.

IMHO most tin coins that were in circulation were pretty ugly; I'm thinking especially of the Japanese one-sen coins issued during WWII. However, DVCollector, your Thai coin would definitely place in the top five of Ugly Coins Of All Time, lol. I wonder if anyone has a pretty tin coin to dispute my statement? Have at it!

Well, in all honesty this coin does have a pretty cool design. It is just the surfaces which give it that rather unattractive look. I must say that the one sen coins of Japan during WWII weren't that bad with regard to their design. They just have a very short lifespan and are easily affected by the elements.

When I called these coins ugly, I was referring to the general appearance, not the design, after exposure to greasy fingers and the elements.

However, if you REALLY want to see ugly, drop a zincoln into your garden and dig it up a year later.

They're not so bad looking minted in bright tin, but this isn't what we have here.
Cool thing about "grey tin" is it's no longer metallic--the coin is now a solid dark material, it's not dirt/tarnish.
