I purchased this first 1696/5 Taler a couple of years back. Note how clear the overdate is.

You just have to admire the brutal reality of the engravors and wonder about the ineffectuality of this particular ruler - I mean - would you allow this coin with this image to be issued in your name?

It's such an interesting area to collect and study -- congratulations on a nice addition

Based on Davenport this second one is a variety of a narrower bust (DAV-3245A) vs. the top one (DAV 3245). I am not sure I see the difference perhaps the jaw on the top one is wider than the second.

I think I just make out the overdate--I think I see the extension of the 5 NW of the 6.
If you can post a larger pic of the date area, I'll see it gets added to the world variety gallery.

I'm just interested in details because I collect overdates, but most of mine are 19th C.
