I have numerous mint sets and proof sets and am curious to know whether it is best to keep the coins contained within the set as they are or to remove them from the set and go ahead and send them in to be graded? What is best for the value of the coins and my collection?

As a general rule a single coin needs a retail value of at least $100 after slabbing to justify all costs involved in sending it in.

In general - keeping a mint set in its own OGP packaging is more desirable than spending a ton of cash to get them graded when most won't warrant the cost because the value is far below the pricing of grading them all.
I have 2 collections going :
One I keep all in OGP
and another I placed into Dansco albums for display.

What do you suggest as far as obtaining a value of my collection? Appraisal?

I suggest you learn grading https://www.pcgs.com/photograde/ and then check current values on ebay looking at ebay sold values and here http://m.numismedia.com/rarecoinprices.htm
I for one have always had trouble with grading

Leave them as is. Definitely not worth the grading costs.

Unless you have some really old proof sets (say 1930's through 1950's) the coins are not worth the cost of sending to a TPG for grading. Just leave them as-is.

Do it yourself. Learn how to give each coin an appropriate grade and value - then add them all up using any number of available market value tools.
