Yes, even if that was trapped zinc dust under the copper plating, it would still be a spender for me.

Yes, zinc issues. Not uncommon in the early years of zinc core cent production.

That one is in particular bad shape. The zinc is rotting under the copper plating.

yeah that's a good example of poor planchet design & use by the US MINT. It's funny they are still using this zinc core planchet for 30+ years, even though it is defective.

Don't intend to be argumentative here... If the US mint did take 'greater pride' in its products, what would such products look like, what would their characteristics be, and would Mint operations (materials used and minting processes) be more costly? Just asking.

I think the mint takes considerable pride in all its denominations of 5¢ and up. It also put a great deal of effort into the 2009 Lincoln cents.
I think the only change they should make is to switch cents to a plated steel core, like the Euro cents. But there are probably many pocket lobbies that would block that move, including the people who make those penny stretcher souvenir machines for rest stops.

I do realize that the US Mint is working within a budget, limited budget to be sure, but the whole zinc core cent idea was and is a bad one. They knew it from the start and kept using it.

Looks like that coin is suffering from a severe case of acne. Have you tried Clearasil?
