I'm looking through some old coins I got from my Grandfather many years ago. I came across this quarter which look strange. I'm not sure if it is a mint error or not, I have no experience with coins at all. Any ideas?

It's spent time in an acidic situation -- cup holder, soil, something.

I agree on an acid attack. Probably from a fountain.

@gps, first welcome to CCF.

Second, yes sure looks like it spent time in a corrosive environment. It should be severely underweight--can you please post the weight? Thx.

I put in question if this coin do not loose more then half of the cladding. I see nothing interesting on this 1965 Quarter.

There are lots of ways of inventing deliberate PMD to make some interesting fake errors.
I collect them all, for my self education, and add them to my 'black' collection.

gpssjim,

I agree with some type of acid damage, PMD. Not an error or variety.
