On a total impulse, I added this coin to an existing ebay order for $1.64. It was discussed in this prior thread, but to no conclusion. The coin arrived today, so I took some pictures. I realize that my coin photography skills are much better suited to small, modern American coins, so if there is something I can do better with limited equipment, your advice is welcome. I tried some pics in indirect sunlight and some in my homemade axial box. The last pics are the seller's images.

I find that the coin is much easier to see when not zoomed in. On the table, the details are relatively visible.

What does it weigh?

In the original listing it is "150-75 BC Ancient India-Ujjain Karshapana Coin P.581".

Pieper-581 is from Vidarbha, which is a different state.

If it is like these from Ujjain, the circles should be in a pattern. But if it is a punch mark coin, you will not find a match - it is made from several punches, each applied in a different order and orientation.

The four armed symbol seems similar to some in this article:

Ok, so a multiple punch coin has a sequence of symbols. Learned something there. I don't think it has the four orbed cross large symbol. Is the svastika from a different dynasty, era, ruler? I understand it is a Hindu symbol, if I'm not mistaken.

On page seven of the "Books, Downloads, Website" sticky thread, I posted a link to a somewhat chronological slideshow of Indian coins. The link is still good. It might be worth scanning through the coins there.

I feel confident that your coin is very similar to those labeled "Eran-Vidisha, 200 BC, Copper (2), 1.98g & 2.43g, Swastika with Taurine arms" at the 'Hobby of Kings' link provided above. The trick now is to find an actual reference for the type. A lot of puzzle-solving fun for $1.64! One has to feel sorry for those simply plugging Lincoln pennies into a little blue folder.

It is quite a bit of fun! The main challenge seems to be the accessibility of research materials. But that probably gets easier as you get more familiar with categories of coins. I had no idea that ancient coins could be so inexpensive! I will definitely be adding more to my collection.

I have to agree about albums. I coin roll hunt for nickels, but I've just never been able to get into the Dansco mindset. I think I'd just lose patience and buy the nickels that never appear in circulation. Variety hunting is more my style.
