Hello :) My uncle gave me a few old coins and I decided to try and figure out what they are, and if they are real. This is the first one I'm working on.he said it might be a "denarius". Even if it's not real, I still think it's nifty but am curious to know if it's the real deal. I'm not good with my phone so I hope the picture is ok. Thoughts?

Can you put up a shot of the other side of the coin please? And if you can, a diameter and weight in grams would help. At first glance I think I see signs of an ottoman empire coin. Oh yeah... and

Thank you for the warm welcome! The coin measures 5/8 of an inch (maybe a hair or two smaller, but nearly 5//8 on the nose) and as for weight, I don't have a proper scale so not much help there...somewhere between 2 and 3 grams. I'm having a tough time getting decent pictures no matter what I do, as the coin is in poor shape but here's one of each side. The first one looks like a boat to me, with a bunch of oars (or a drunken centipede? :P). As for the 2nd picture, I can't for the life of me figure out what's on there. Appreciate any help I can get as I start my journey into coin collecting!

First welcome to CCF. Second, it seems like your uncle could give you slightly easier coins to get you started. I'm not seeing very much that is identifiable but yes that might be a ship's bow. Either way you will need a scale and vernier calipers to more accurately measure your coins.

I'll let someone else weigh in on this. The first picture I thought I could make out the Ottoman Empire tugrah, but now I don't think so.

No idea what it is, but I don't think it's a denarius. It's too round and the edges too neat. Most hammered coins have uneven edges and/or splits.

Well this is about as rough as they come I suspect (and only suspect) that we are looking at a "Janiform" Dioscuri Something like this Roman Republic C. Fonteius AR Denarius Janiform & Galley But in this truly 'miserable' condition I wouldn't bet on it !

Thanks for all your replies folks & it really is in bad shape so I'm not surprised that it's a tough one to identify. Even if I never know exactly what it is, but can consider it "real" at some point, then that's a win in my books!

I hate to give up on a challenge, so I'm giving it one last try. I went to visit a friend who was able to help with measurements and one last attempt at a decent photo. If anyone wants to weigh-in, happy to hear your thoughts. The picture on the right - I can see a shape on the left side, looks like something vertical and skinny, but fatter at the top. Kinda looks like a caterpillar. Once again, I'm super helpful :P Weight seems to be 2.7-2.8g Dimension is 17mm as best we can measure

I'm thinking that FVRIVS RVFVS is on the money.

Another newbie question - whatever this is (lol) does it look "real" or would it be typical for someone to fake coins in such poor condition? I'm pretty stoked about getting into collection and have so much to learn!

In this condition it is very nearly impossible to determine very much beyond a 'vague' generalization Probably genuine But don't bet the house on it ! Looking at your recent pics . It does seem to resemble a Marc Antony denarius Although in this condition it really wouldn't fetch the price of a cup of coffee ! But I see enough points to convince me that this is what it pretends to be But whether it actually is ?

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts so far :) it's so interesting to get see your feedback. Even if this coin is worth nothing, I love it to bits and can hardly wait to explore this hobby more.
