My knowledge on these is about as close to nothing as it can get... I know it's made of wax! I know these were issued for parents, on letters acting in place of signatures etc... Any additional thoughts, opinions, attribution, etc?

@roma, since you have the piece in hand, any chance of you posting the inscription? Thx. I don't know much about these things, but having that info could be helpful.

@spence, I no longer have it in hand... I was only in the shop briefly during lunch. I'm going to try and piece the inscription together later from these photos. I thought someone might know more off the bat..

Ok yes maybe someone else will know. The imagery reminds me of Icarus, which I suppose is appropriate for a wax seal. I look forward to hearing others thoughts though.

A long staff with a cross at the top would leave the impression is was a religious stamp as my first impression was Greek/Roman.

There's a reference here which I think may be it or similar...? Something to do with the The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem? I'm still researching what it is all about, but I wanted to send it over in case it helps :) https://www.google.com/books/editio...c=frontcover1 Il sigillo di cui qui si parla è di cera bianca in forma ovale racchiuso in una teca di otto ne e rappresenta la risurrezione del Salvatore colla leggenda intorno Sigillum AU Patriarch Herosolymitano insitu Equit SS Sepulcri DNJC 1 The seal referred to here is made of white wax in an oval shape enclosed in a brass case and represents the resurrection of the Savior with the legend surrounding it Sigillum AU Patriarch Hierosolymitana [Jerusalem] insitu Equit SS Sepulcri DNJC

@brumm that is it! Thank you for finding the cite in a text from 1888 in latin.
I am going to dive into the significance and maybe go buy it this morning.
It looks like the wax seal was used to confer the diploma upon members of the holy equestrian order .... Seems like an interesting piece.

I have identified it. These wax seals were affixed to the certificates when Knighthood into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem was granted. I have only seen one other on an old auction site. From additional reading and @brumm's reference, I think these were used from roughly 1868 - ?. The only other example is from 1882.
