I see a lot of laminations on Buffalo nickels, but not so many nice woody coins. I really like this one so I picked it up. 1913 Buffalo nickel type 2 - woody

Thanks folks! And I guess if you're gonna have an example of a woody buffalo this would be a good date to have.

Nice example but I've got to ask about a couple of anomalies.
Under the chiefs chin, the area between his nose and the R (LIBERTY), and the curve going SW of the lowest feather. Are they part of a clash or just associated with circulation?

Quote: Under the chiefs chin .... Are they part of a clash or just associated with circulation? This is a die clash inflicted by E PLURIBUS UNUM from the reverse die. This effect is sometimes referred to as the "chin whiskers variety." To my experience, it's more commonly seen on 1914 nickels.

The curved line coming off the lowest feather did look like the bison's neck & back outline.

@ Petespockets55 .... Consider the possibility that this coin could be the beginning of a "clashed die" or "error" type coin collection. Aside from plugging album holes, there are countless ways to collect coins, eh what?

Thanks Pete for picking up on that and ExoGuy for explaining it. I have added that to the label so it is not forgotten. And now do I file it with the die clash coins or the woody coins? Such decisions... Probably best to go with the clash binder.
