Alright, heres the dilemma, but I'm sure its easy to solve.

After studying up a bit on commemorative coins using my handy RedBook, I've came to a couple conclusions on the direction I want my collection to take.

The first one is I definitely prefer the early commemorative coins over the modern ones. Their are a few modern commem's I like, I even own the beautiful 2008 bald eagle, but nothing I really want to spend any money on to collect. And their are a lot of nice early commemorative, but only three certain ones that I would like to have in my collection.

The first one would be the stone mountain commemorative. Its relatively cheap, attractive, and I've actually been to stone mountain. Climbed on top of it and all that jazz. So I think that would be a nice one to have.

The second one would be the oregon trail commemorative. Such a beautiful coin. A coin that I think would appeal to not only fellow collectors but people who have no acquaintance with the hobby at all. Just a really nice design is why I would want it in my collection.

The third one is the maine centennial. Its not the most attractive design, but I have a strong heritage with the state of maine. Both of my parents are from there, %90 of my extended family lives there, and having been to the state many many times it is one of the most beautiful places in the country in my opinion.

So heres the problem.....how to get ahold of these coins? My local coin shop has one Colombian half but thats it, and I was put on a waiting list that they have when they go to shows and in case they have anything come in, but that was three months ago. My town only has one coin show a year, everything else is over a three hour drive away. I've had really bad experiences with ebay in the past so thats not going to happen with such expensive items. I've already posted two threads in the "BUY" section of this forum with no luck.

The only thing I can see is an online shop, but even that is a chore. Many I have come across don't have any early commemeratives at all let alone these coins. AMPEX has two maine centennials in stock but am I over paying at $100 for an AU piece. Is it going to be a mistake if I don't buy these pieces in UNC. condition?

Maybe you guys have some advice.

Thanks

The classic commems did occasionally circulate so getting ones with a bit of wear can be a more affordable way to accumulate them. For an online source of commems, Harlan J Berk has a nice selection and quite a few in circulated condition, I purchased my AU Stone Mountain from them a couple years ago. $100 for an AU 1920 Maine is not too shabby, check out the values at Numismedia.

Theres plenty of almost all of the older half dollar commeratives around me. If your interested I could pick one of for you and sell it to you for cost. You just would have to pay shipping

Thanks for the offer highroller. If you don't mind I'd like to keep that offer in the air incase I want to talk to you later about it. After a little research I decided to get that AU Maine half that AMPEX had. It did look like a pretty good buy after all. Don't want to get everything all at once. It would break the bank and the spirit of collecting for me. When I get the halve I'll post pictures.

Thanks for the help you guys.

I have some success purchasing commoratives from reputable dealers on ebay. I tend to dislike buying from ebay but the selection offered there is 2nd to none.

Good luck!

Great Coin!. I agree that ebay has a great selection and there are many reputable sellers on there to buy from. You just have to be careful, big thing is looking at feedback and return policies! I never buy a coin from ebay without a solid and reasonable return policy.

Your right there Cownas22 , checking the seller feedback is vital.Even if the feedback says 100% still check it because a seller with high volume of sales can recover from bad feedback very quickly.

I dont mind taking a bit of a chance with some items of low value but one like this you really do want to do your homework on the seller.

i agree, ebay has selection up the wazoo and if your your careful checking on sellers feedback you can minimize the risks...that being said I don't think I would puchse any kind of higher priced items.
In My Humble Opinion

Why was a 2 year old thread dug up?

I hope you're not trying to just bounce your post count.
