HI. I noticed this 1989 penny has a raised portion between the "T" in UNITED and the "E" in CENT. What could cause this? Also, there are raised lines everywhere on this coin. They are even behind the columns. They all appear to be running in the same general direction. The front of the coin appears completely normal. Thanks.

I'm not certain what causes the raised area around the rim, but it's relatively common on the Zincolns. The raised lines that you see in the field is caused by a Mint technician sanding or polishing off what was probably a die clash. This too is very common, especially on Lincoln Cents. ~ Jim

I think the raised portion is caused by a deteriorated die,a.k.a.,a worn out die,the raised lines everywhere are from a mint tech trying to remove a die clash as Jim Archibald stated. These things are quite common on Zincolns (a copper plated zinc core cent made from 1982 till now)

Sometimes the mint techs can get pretty aggressive with their die polishing..
