Thought I remembered reading on this forum somewhere that more than 2 clips (corner of the sheet) was impossible?

Look at the illustration below and follow the progress of each punched row in numerical order. This is how quad clips happen, to my understanding. Sometimes the machine fouls and backs up, punches rows over too far, too close together, etc. Many clipped blanks are weeded out at the press, but some make it through.

Of course most quad clips aren't so 'clipped' - my example is a bit exaggerated for teaching purposes.

Very cool.

Now that I see the diagram, I bet what I remember reading was that there can't be more than 2 straight clips which would make sense on the corner of the sheet.

Yup, that part is true...but USUALLY a corner would have a straight and a ragged. Not usually two straight clips...those are quite a bit more scarce.

The maximum number of curved clips I've seen on a U.S. coin is five. The maximum number of curved clips I've seen on a world coin is six. I've heard tell of State Quarter with seven clips, but I'm skeptical.

It's clear multiple curved clips are produced in a manner somewhat different from that implied by the diagram reproduced by coppercoins. The spacing never matches that of conventionally-punched strip no matter how you move it around. I've never quite understood it, but some cases probably involve oddly-spaced holes that are punched over again.
