I'm thinking this 55 D cent is a "rare" bezel coin" :) ..It's hard to believe that those scallops on the edge can actually been worn into the surface of the coin. A lot of copper has been moved around over the years. Thanks for looking..

Well for sure it is mechanical damage, but I agree that damage from a bezel seems most likely.

That's what I've wondered about too. The machine must have squashed the rim that much when they put it in the bezel or holder.

I agree with a former Encased Coin. The scallops were not worn in they were pressed in from the encasement.
