The L and I are very close on 1989 nckels, but this looks more than normal. Is it normal for the L and I to be joined?

Given the single image posted, we may be seeing a Die Deterioration issue. The design will have the L and I very close to begin with.

Gigi2,

Compare your coin to other 1989-P nickels. Try using ebay for photos if you do not have any actual coins handy.
