The link below is to a PCGS F-12 Seated quarter on Heritage. I've never sent a coin in to a TPG, but had always assumed that a coin like this would be body-bagged. I think this qualifies as "honest" circulation damage and am encouraged that it was slabbed.

Those of you with more experience with TPGs, is this normal or unusual? Or is it because this is a rare date?

It just kinda brings home the subjective nature of professional grading. On another occasion, a coin with similar damage might bodybag. And yes, I suspect that the rarity of the coin played a role. Heritage's complete sales history of 1864-S Quarters amounts to only 35 coins - that's beyond scarce.

When an F-12 can go for almost $1000, I know it's out of my league.

Definitely out of my league, too.

But I do have circulated classic coins with similar issues due (in my opinion) to honest circulation. I'd like to think I could have some of them slabbed (not that it's likely I'll ever want to).

Have any of our forum members submitted a coin with similar "circulation marks" and had them body-bagged? Or had them slabbed?

I am intrigued, having spotted this coin!

If you go to the auction and look at normal sized images, the marks (damage) are barely visible. For a scarce date, that type of "damage" is commonly slabbed by major TPG.

This coin has probably been net graded down to F12 for the damage. The details are close to VF20; this is a common method to account for (or discount for) the damage.
