  I don't have a Three Cent Nickel, and I'm surfing ebay for a starter piece. What are the opinions on this coin: grade, value, subjective quality.

Wow, maybe VG/F obverse, EF/AU reverse. I'll defer to the experts.

That was one of the things that stopped me. I had a really hard time with Photograde, making sense of why the obverse seems a different state than the reverse. Also, the tiara seems to have way more wear than the rest of the obverse, but all the examples make it seem like other high points wear first.

The surfaces don't have much eye appeal otherwise I'd guess it makes VF20. This is relatively low dollar coin so don't flip out much cash for this example.

Hondo, I don't know much about Three Cent Nickels. This one seemed decent for the sub-$20 offerings on ebay, but that's why I am asking. This one is lusterless, but it didn't have the corrosion or scratching issues of other coins. |

Brandmeister, I see what you mean about details 3 cent nickels. I sorted them by ascending price, and the majority are just garbage - holed, scratched, mutilated, corroded, etc. Not sure why the sellers even bothered to list them - I'd throw them in a junk box. You're not going to get any luster on a well-circulated one, however. No joke Hondo - can't imagine those sell. Most look like bad dirt finds.
Brandmeister - I have a number of 1865s in F-VF range - sans corrosion. If that is a date that interests you send me an PM and I'll share some pics.

these can be a challenge to grade due to composition. the reverse is actually quite nicely struck as attested to by the vertical bars, bow and veins. obv is weaker strike. overall the coin has the look of a cleaning where all the original skin has been removed. I grade this one AU50 probably details (cleaned)

Yeah, the leaden look made me wonder about the coin. Plus it has gunk in grooved devices, but not other places. But when I look at PCGS reference images for several years, the sub-AU coins also have no life to the metal. Some of them also had a bit of buildup in nooks and crannies, and that didn't seem to change the official PCGS opinion. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin.../images/3740I am in no big rush to buy a Three Cent Nickel, it's just a gap in my small collection. DOCC, maybe you could post a nice VF example on this thread for posterity, so future collectors can see the comparison? I am not attached to a particular year, I am in the market for a single adequate example of the coin. |

Haha, actually a freebie. MD find. I'd guess it would set you back a min of 60. Will take new images (with new scope) of a VF and post in a bit.
