Cents of this era are riddled with such defects.

looks like a small BIE, and nice die cracks also. 1955 was a bad year for these dies for some reason.

A BIE is a chipped die and yours qualifies as a BIE technically. John1

Your coin is listed as Cohen 1955-S BA149. "BA" means it is an "associated" BIE, not yet fully-formed and connecting between the B and the E, though it is nearly so. A while back I found a full BIE that was not listed in Cohen, but turns out it is a later die stage of the BA149 where a larger, full BIE is chipped out. I have named it B150 after Cohen's sequential nomenclature. The new B150 is listed on Cuds-on-Coins as LDB4-1955S-008B 4EL+. Your BA149 is listed on Cuds-on-Coins as LDB4-1955S-008B 4BL+. You can find them at this URL: http://cuds-on-coins.com/ldb4-1955s-2/What I find very interesting is your coin also seems to exhibit an RPM, in fact very similar to RPM-005. I need to go back and check my BA149 and B150 coins to see if they show evidence of an RPM. I am not aware that BA149/B150 are late die stages of RPM-005, so it is a big mystery to me why yours seems to have an RPM.
