OK here is the deal. I just picked up a QX5 to help get close up shots of of finer details on some of my coins. Th problem is that pics are lousy to say the least. Too much light for one thing. Photos are grainy also.

This is the best I can get and it was touched up with picasa3. I have seen others that looked great. Any help would be much appreciated.

And one more thing. What would this be called? Notice the last 5 has some doubling, but that is the only place I see it. Not enough to be called a 1955 double die in my opinion.

That coin is called a poor mans doubled die, what it really is is a deteriorated die or in other words a worn out die,no real value. Can't answer your QX5 question.

I acquire my QX5 images through Control Panel -> Scanners & Cameras. I don't use the QX5 software, or the onboard light, at all. Either way, though, this is hardly what you'd call "sharp optics" and postprocessing will likely be required in all cases. Your sample image is about on par with what mine will do.

Try raising the coin about 1/4 of an inch above the plinth. makes focusing a lot easier.

Tim, diffuse your light. I accomplished this by cutting a piece of plastic milk carton handle. Takes a few tries to get the right angle. Scotchtape will hold it in place. Place your coins on top of a 2x2 coin flip. The white background also helps with the light. I also spaced my flips open about 1/4 inch, this also helps with the image.
This is an example of a coin simular to the one you posted. At 60x.

Seems is plenty of scattered info on this topic that if centralized can be of far better use to those seeking choice issues regarding USB microscopes and similar imaging tools.

Point is; many waste time focus-ing on a certain brand of m/scope when clearly better options exist. For instance here ...

Every one has their own personal favorites. Which they will be passionate about. Be it the $50, $200, or $1000 option. Any of the threads currently running will provide the forum members with enough information to do their own research and make up their own mind which way they want to go. In this particular thread 'Tim Stroud' has a QX5 and was asking for information about it on how to improve his pictures. Not whether he should have chosen adifferent machine.
