With my new point-shoot camera, I've wondered if a tripod would improve picture quality. As a test, I shot the same coin under similar lighting, one hand-held and another using a sturdy tripod/timer. The detail photo below is a composite of these two shots. So the big question is--which one is the tripod shot--side a. or side b.? To make it more fun, this will be a contest, and the prize will be this 1902 Sweden 1 Ore coin. Right guesses will enter a pool from which I'll draw a winner on Christmas eve. Good luck!

A is tripod. B is hand held?
I am terrible with pics but I figure when I hold the cam I play on slight angles for glares where a tripod being immobile just hits it as it comes.
I would think for any real improvement on sharpness it would require movement to be an issue. If you have a steady hand then a tripod is only a convenience, not really an improvement. But like I said, my pictures are terrible so what would I know.
Nice thread. Thanks for the contest.

RFB--think so? You'll know for sure on Christmas eve. After doing this test, I think a tripod is best if there are problems with camera shake or getting the lens perpendicular to the coin. When a coin is tilted to the camera, no amount of sharpening is going to fix that photo. Both were taken at 1/80 sec at f2.8--which isn't a very forgiving setting.

Nic, prior to your post there was one vote for A=tripod and b+handheld, and 2 votes for A=handheld and B=tripod. So you went with the minority. Just making sure you wrote what you wanted to.... DV, great contest. What would have been interesting, and maybe at the close of the contest you can reveal, is the handheld pic and the tripod pic of the exact same area instead of having a left and right side. That way we can compare the actual coin features in a given area between the two. Regardless, well done, and you sure have some steady hands......

If it helps, here is that comparison--where a. and b. apply to the same photograph in both views. If anyone wants a second guess, that will apply to the drawing. I'm betting this will confuse a few contestants

Kurt, this is only a guess: A=Tripod. I see no difference in the pgotograph, other than a line in the middle, and the "a", and "b".
