I may have some advantage now with the new set of shots. When I looked at the original pair I was going to say b - tripod. Now I think it's the other way around. OK,
a - tripod, final answer.

I'll say B is the tripod, and A is handheld. Thanks for the contest.

I'm betting this will confuse a few contestants

That it certainly did, including myself. What a great contest. Well done Kurt. I'm sure it's posted somewhere else, but what is your new camera anyway?

My guess is

A: hand
B: tripod

With the image stabilization feature in point and shoot cameras, I wouldn't think clarity would be too much of an issue. The issue would be with lighting as your body/arms/hands would have to hold the camera and get close to the coin, blocking more of the light. This opposed to using a tripod that would block less light and allow more light onto the coin. And in the second set of photos, B seems to have more of a glare to me. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it...

Thanks for the contest!

I'm using a Canon SD790IS.

Just to clarify on my test, both photos were taken at the same distance @ 2.3X macro zoom. This setting gives me enough room to avoid casting shadows on a small coin like this. I took 3 shots for each and picked the sharpest for this comparison. Both photos received slight processing- using equal values.

As a final thought--image stabilization apparently works very well.

....and that's the key. IS, in the right hands (and yours appear to be steady hands indeed), is worth 3 stops in good lighting, making your 1/80 shot into a 1/200(ish) shot. If forced to guess, based on the second set of pics, I'm thinking "A" was handheld.

Tried that myself a while back, and Id say that 'A' is by the hand. Did you use a timed shot(automatic delay) so the vibration would settle before the camera automaticly takes the shot, a remote button, or the button on the camera? But I'll stick with 'A' by hand to the end!
