Sellers pics. I stumbled across this one and picked it up tonight for $95. While there is outline of the second leaf it is faint and the rest of the reverse is in line with 109a and in particular the lack of details in the Eagle on the left side. Curious, for those of you familiar with the series, do you think this is 109 or 109a?   Edited by adam126402 01/06/2024 12:12 am

Since this is the grading section, I'll say VG-10 with an old cleaning, might go straight.

VG-10 for me. The second leaf is still visible, so I'd say it's an O-109.

Thanks for the feedback. I was figuring O-109, but have also seen a number of PCGS and NGC examples where there is still evidence of the 2nd leaf, so thought I'd ask. Of course the pics aren't great, so will be curious to see how it looks in hand. Regardless, it's a nice fit for my low grade CBH collection.

The 109/109a designation will always be tough and unpredictable. There is one more clash of the dies that is seen, so your example is not of the latest die state. I had a buddy send it a couple slightly mushier and LDS examples than this and he missed on both of them.
To be transparent about my observations, the clashed scroll visible under the bust is my reference point. The clashed U should just about touch the drapery in the latest die state. The die crack going through the date should also be more defined.

The coin arrived today, much darker than sellers pics. Coin is pictured on a white paper towel and incandescent lighting. Does this change anyone's opinion on cleaning?

i didnt think it was cleaned before and still dont. pretty close to F15 however TPG's like PCGS do not take into consideration, in most cases, strike issues and treat these as more wear for some reason. I think it would grade out at F12. the scratch on the reverse is another debatable question as to whether it would grade straight. to me it looks like a staple scratch which would details the coin.

I would push to a technical grade VF-20 because this type comes so mushy. I know nobody else will agree, including PCGS, so I'll settle with F-15. This is a good example of why everyone should observe photo conditions of online sales. If the background is black, such as the original ebay post, the coin will appear darker in hand. If the background color is white, like the OP's in-hand photos, the coin will appear slightly brighter in hand. Same thing goes with lighting. If there is a single lamp used (look at shadows), then common circulation hairlines will pop even if the coin is not actually cleaned.
