----Ok first, of thanks to everyone for being patiant, with all my quetions, I have learned a lot, and have a lot more to learn. I had no idea that the coin industry was so complex, and interesting.
On grading, I know the basics, like P-1, would be the poorest, coin (with a date and mint mark). and Ms-70 would be the perfect coin (uncirculated). my two questions are:
1. If I were to run into say an Au-55 grade coin, in normal circulation, ( could I call it uncirculated )
2. As far as grading goes, does the Red Book, contain the basic info on how to grade, or is there a good website, I should look at ?

AU-55 by definition is not uncirculated. AU is "almost uncirculated" or "about uncirculated" so you can't call it uncirculated. I want to make sure I understood question #1 correctly because you seem to have answered your own question. Thanks

Oh and P-1 would not have a date or mintmark. You would barely be able to discern what coin it is in this condition.

For question #2...the Red Book does have descriptions for how to grade the coins by set. I use Coin Values "Making The Grade" guide as a bible. It gives pictures as well as detailed descriptions on what to look for. To my knowledge, it's not available online, but you can buy it at your local coin store, book store (sometimes) or on Amazon or ebay.

1) If a coin has any visible wear, it is by definition no longer an uncirculated coin. However, a coin freshly removed from a roll by a cashier can pass through a few hands in commerce before any wear is visible. It is entirely possible to pluck an uncirculated coin out of change but usually anything you get as change will have some degree of wear. I am one of those people who sees a cashier break open a fresh roll and I ask for a few extras in exchange for a bill, especially with the State Quarters.

2) The RedBook does have a very basic grading outline for each series but I would recommend two excellent books- Photograde and ANA Grading Standards. I own both of them but many people have one or the other.
