I've been hanging on to this penny I found coin roll hunting because of the quizzical nature of the reverse. I would jump to say that it is after-mint damage because of the blob of metal on it but then I look under the blob and see some full detail on the Lincoln Memorial and some lettering. It also has some silver-looking color to it but could just be chemical interaction. Any expert help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dearborn: "looks like glue or something on the reverse to me."
The blob? The penny is normal weight and the blob is metal so I'm inclined to say it's the other half of the penny to make it all 3.2 grams.

It does look like something is "on" the coin. Epoxy?

@cob, that is an interesting one. While I agree with the others that it sure looks like a foreign substance on the coin, the lack of extra weight could be telling. If you have access to a local university with a science/chemistry/materials department, you might be able to work with a professor to get time on their SEM/EDS machine to see what metals comprise that blob. It is a shame that it looks like someone has worked very hard to scrape away at it though.

Something is splattered on it. Solder, glue, finding out what it is isn't worth the effort IMO. It's 3% too heavy which seems reasonable for a layer of whatever it is.

I have several similar examples of clear glue on coins,
and oddly enough they're all 50's & 60's LMC's.
