Picked this up a a while ago. Interested to hear some grade thoughts and also, opinion on coloration. Don't know a whole bunch about these but just looking at Photograde, appears colors are all over the board from VG on up.

Anyone think it has been messed with, toned, etc... More so the Reverse - guess it could have been in an album.

I'll say EF-40, original and choice for grade.

copper ages to many different colors. this one is fine just a little dirty. I might consider an acetone bath to see if it helps at all.

i think its just short of XF...VF35

VF35+ to me so close to EF it's a toss up really. I don't think it's been messed with in a way that would affect the value. Most coins over 150 years in the USA have had some sort of cleaning. This one looks pretty good. It's a plain 5. Like panzaldi says, acetone, - won't hurt the color (unless it's been added) can't really go wrong, all my two centers get an acetone bath to remove any organic grunge that could be active or corrosive, like PVC residue. No need to rinse, just a swish around and let evaporate. Use pure acetone from the hardware, not nail polish remover.

I could argue Vf-35 or EF-40, agreed.
