Hello all! New coin from my recently found stash of USA coins! This time it's a Liberty Head Nickel/V Nickel from 1905. Again from Philly. Again seems a pretty common date/mint combo. Do you see anything worthy of notice about this specimen or something to be talked about? And finally, how would this be graded? Are we in the XF-AU realm? Thanks a lot!

I suggest a grade closer to VF35 range, definitely not as high as AU. The obverse rim ding below the 5 in the date might bring a details designation.

VF details. a couple issues with this one. one it was cleaned a little too heavy to grade straight and the rim hit which is minor, not sure if its enough to detail the coin.

Thanks all for your help! Quote: it was cleaned a little too heavy panzaldi, what are you looking at to say that? Are you looking at scratches or are you looking at the difference between "nicer" coin surfaces vs the "pits" where gunk deposits? Or something else? Thanks a lot for explaining!

Agree with Panzaldi, VF details cleaned. The gunk buildup around the stars where it was difficult to remove during cleaning and the small hairlines in the fields that continue on as they cross the relief of the devices indicate cleaning.

It's nowhere near AU and even XF is very optimistic. I'd go VF+ and as noted above, not a good exapmle of that. Sorry, I calls'em as I sees'em.

Howdy all, Thanks again, lovely to read your comments and learn about grading! I think we have about 6 votes for VF30/35 straight vs 2 votes for VF30/35 details. For the purpose of my next question, let's say we agree on VF30/35 straight. If I wanted to put a dollar amount on this coin, should I trust ngccoin.com and check their price guide? This would put the coin at 30$. Is that a reasonable ask or do the 30$ refer to a slabbed coin? Saw a completed listing on ebay for about 15$ from couple of days ago for a VF+ naked coin. Thanks for your time!

I'd say VF and I would be surprised if you got $15 for it. There is a wipe that goes from stars 3/4 towards stars 12/13 and the rim bump under the 5. As you said this is a common coin.

Quote: panzaldi, what are you looking at to say that? I'm looking mainly at the stars and gunk around all the devices that could not be removed. I think the original skin has been removed due to how dull the overall coin looks. take a look at photograde photos of the circulated examples and compare the color and surfaces to this one. I don't think the coin was harshly cleaned. since its a common coin. i'd look for one with a little more eye appeal and less chance it could have been cleaned.

VF25, not sure about cleaning, definitely details due to rim damage obverse (it's not a Cud.)

Thanks all! Yeah probably a 10$ coin or somewhere in that range? Quote: I think the original skin has been removed due to how dull the overall coin looks It's possible that it was cleaned 50-60 or more years ago. One wonders when the cleaning becomes part of the history instead of being foreign to the coin? Interesting how some consider the "ding" worthy of detail and some don't! It's definitely a ding, was probably dropped at some point in time
