This nickel is a bit chewed up, but I believe the obverse is misaligned enough for the lettering to melt into the rim.

In doing a little more research, it seems that when the hammer die is misaligned, that will also produce a poorly struck design on the anvil die. The area missed by the strike probably doesn't have enough pressure to correctly form the rim and devices, even if the anvil die is properly aligned with the planchet. In this example, America on the reverse is directly behind the thickened rim where the hammer die missed the mark on the obverse.

Not worth much, but a nice example for sure.
