I was wondering if any of you could help me identify this mark on the reverse of a Buffalo nickel. I cannot read the date. When I first saw this I though it was possibly a mint mark from the New Orleans mint but these weren't produced there.

I'm sure you realize this is just some sort of PMD and not a mint mark!

Without doing at least some kind of damage to the obverse as well. But thanks for the information!

@bri, yes good point that often times mechanical damage will show up on both sides of the coin. I agree that the circular mark is damage, but wonder if it isn't a round drop of solidified metal, such as solder which was added to this coin somewhere along the way.

brichardson9, it appears to me that some punched your coin with an awl, and damage can be seen at the back of the Native American's head on the obverse. Red dots on overlays are approximate location of the damage on the reverse, while the red circle shows the corresponding area on the obverse.

Sorry everyone I should have used a different title to my post. At first glance, without my glasses or digital scope, I just saw a perfect O on the back and thought this could be a mint mark.

Coinfrog, I know little about coins but would never post something as a hoax/lie and waste everyone's time.

Errers and Varietys, Wow lol Pareidolia? Not asking if you see Jesus on a Cheeto here.

Spence and Hondo thank you for formulating plausible, non-judgmental answers.

Hondo, I believe the damage you circled on the obverse is the "ribbon"? used to tie the feather in the Indian's hair. The O on the reverse is to the right of that spot. There is a small spot almost directly opposite the O on the obverse, but it is much smaller and while the O is about 3/32 of an inch in from the edge, the other spot is almost 1/8 inch in from the edge putting on the edge or outside of the O.

I think Spence is right in that is some type of "additive" damage.
