As with many others, searching Jefferson nickels was my first foray into coin collecting back in 2005. Roll searching and building the highest graded circulation set I could proved to be the training grounds of my grading education. Over the last couple years I have decided to upgrade this set to MS and thought I would bring you all along for the finishing touches. I was about 80% complete when I found the below set on ebay and thought it was worth a chance. Take a ride with me and see how it turns out! I have posted a couple pictures from my archived posts of previous purchases. I will post more photos and links to the grading forum as I decide which coins to swap out of the set purchased from ebay and what I already have. I'm excited and can't wait to get some feedback and help along the way with you fine folks here on CCF! Jefferson nickel Set Purchased from ebay. Arrives in a few days. Fingers crossed. It was a premium priced set. https://www.ebay.com/itm/285576232770A couple highlights from coins I have already to wet your appetite! 1939 D MS Nickel 1944 D MS War Nickel Grading Thread http://goccf.com/t/439246 Edited by captainkurt 01/29/2024 4:20 pm

Here is where it all began; with four complete sets found (mostly) from circulation. Each set grade matched, g/vg, vg/fine, and F/XF with plenty of extras. Also shown is a nice hoard of BU rolls to work with once I get the pre-2000's picked, graded, and cataloged. The unsearched BU rolls start in 2004 and go through to the present (including the coveted 2009 P's selling at a crazy $200 a roll). Lastly the US Mint westward Journy complete set BU rolls still in their boxes.

Very good looking coins. You must know that the 1939D you have was minted in 1940 it is the type 2, do you have the type 1?

Its great that you took time to try to find things first in circulation as well. As coin collectors, we all learn that much of the enjoyment of this hobby isn't found simply in acquiring the coins we want, but also in looking for the coins we want. The thrill of the hunt is what keeps many of us going and I agree. Its also been getting harder to find quality older coins in circulation see nickels https://coinweek.com/epic-100-nickel-roll-search/ and https://coinweek.com/classic-u-s-co...ncoln-cents/ I mainly had been learning about errors and varieties for that reason to continue the enjoyment of the search as the typical roll search no longer produces silver or other easy to find things much anymore either. Stewart Blay went to different shows and collectors instead. Blay, who died last year, explained how he selected coins: "My philosophy is to find the finest example of each date and type. Originality, luster, and preservation are the most important factors to me." while others just try to usually buy the best grade for each they can afford for what they are trying to collect. No real one way to do this.

I really don't pay too much attention to varieties but given that there is a 1942 Type 1 and Type 2 it seems appropriate to include the 1939 types in my final MS Set. Just studied up on the marker for the 1939 Type 2 (1940 reverse). The serif on the 's' in EPU. Gonna have to look into my circulated sets now

Looking good so far. I appreciate and understand the effort it takes to find the complete Jefferson set from bank rolls - I completed that quest years ago. Looking forward to seeing more of your MS set.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.artToo many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

Really good looking Nickels there! If I ever get done with my Lincoln Cent collection, I'm definitely searching 5 cent next, plenty of great info here on this forum. I estimate I have about 500 pre-1970's nickels that have been sitting for about 50 years.

I remember reading your posts on what was it - 300,000 nickels searched? I found it fascinating, and it was a driving force in my desire to search and set aside a sample of what was available in circulation over a decade ago. Had to bring one of the threads back from the archives from a fellow Marylander Check it out folks! http://goccf.com/t/163828
