Diameter is 15mm. Text looks arabic. I know Mamluk coins have similar rosettes/flowers on the reverse but I've never seen one thats eight-pointed like this.

@peta, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please post a weight of this piece? Also, in two of your pics, the coin looks to be bronze or gold, while in the other it looks silver. Which is closest to the real color? Thx.

Thank you all for the welcome! I don't have a precise scale but it is probably between 2 and 3 grams. Made of copper or bronze and it came in a lot of Ottoman coins.

Possibly a follis from 11-12th century Sicily?
This was a period of transition from older Byzantine currency system to a more European system, and they had some coppers with cufic script. I will see what I can find.

Edit: I was thinking of a coin like this, but it is too small, so not a match.
