Hello,

Got a few a Morgans for Christmas gifts and now I'm learning about VAMs. Anything too obvious that I'm missing? I'm planning to submit for grading. I'm guessing MS 64, what do you think?

Much Appreciated.....Thanks :)

It's kind of hard to tell with just the full coin shots but looks like a near, slanted date. You also have the different reverse designs to narrow it down more with. As for the grade, I'm sure others will help you but would think the scrapes and scratches on the face, cheek area will come into play.

even with the excessive light the obv of this coin is not in the MS64 range. at best its MS63 and probably 62.

consider the following

two reasons to slab a coin

1. its a rare coin that needs authenticated and preserved

2. you are planning on selling the coin and the cost of acquisition plus the grading fee's would warrant it without chewing up all your profit

most seasoned collectors don't even slab their coins due to the cost. you could expect to spend a minimum of $18 (economy grading), in this case $22 plus shipping/insurance per coin each way plus a subscription to a grading service. For instance PCGS charges a minimum of $69 for a subscription other subscription levels include grading vouchers though so you could reduce these costs. a first submission could cost you in the range of $100. As you can see it really is not worth grading any average coin. NGC is little less expensive.

your coin is probably in the $80-90 range tops. I don't deal in VAMS so before considering this I would investigate this coin first. from what I see there are only 2 and neither one is rare enough to warrant slabbing. you have to decide if that makes sense

i don't slab coins for these reasons especially the cost involved. I don't know why this is so popular today. just making the grading companies wealthy

I dunno, the reasons seem pretty obvious: 1) avoids disputes about grading between buyer and seller, when the difference between grades can mean serious money, 2) allows for ease of entry into the hobby for new collectors/investors/etc, 3) to a degree, preserves the coin from further harm by handling, 4) offers more (but not guaranteed!) assurance of coin authenticity, 5) other things I can't think of right now.

classic_coin...thats all true except you have novice collectors that think that every coin needs slabbed and have no idea that the costs either chew up all the value of the coin or exceed it.

I'm with panzaldi, this is probably a MS-62 and you would be wasting your money getting it graded.
