AU does not surprise, but "Cleaned" is difficult to understand.

I was thinking AU. Nice coin. Looks fine to me, not seeing any signs of a cleaning.

Not sure what they saw that flagged it as cleaned. I don't see any signs of wear in you photos.

I don't even see signs of wear, just a lot of weak strike caused by rough dies.
This looks like a good candidate for a crack-out and resubmit.

DOCC hold the reveal for at least 24hrs Before I saw the slab my first thought was AU55 details (cleaned). the thing that stood out to me was the blotchy surface coloration on both sides. thats the only thing I saw. it could have graded straight imo but whomever looked at it thought is bad enough to detail it. you never know what these people think

Will do on the holdout PAN - I think I promised you that once before in the past. RE: blotchy toning on Reverse. I considered that and reviewed numerous toned straights. A good number of toned seated libs I looked at around that period are blotchy. Some being far worse offenders than this specimen. I think they missed on this coin badly, I do not believe it was cleaned nor do I see wear. Will take negatives when I crack it out to look for friction marks.

On review, the center of the reverse and the left wreath seem a different color from the rest of the reverse and all of the obverse. I wonder if that might be the issue.

Yes, the splotchy toning on the reverse is likely what lead to the details grade. Perhaps improperly rinsed after a chemical cleaning?
Still a nice piece for AU Details - Cleaned. No doubt about that, in my eyes.

for one thing you can't look at TV's to grade from. they are worthless. have to have in-hand photos. BH1964 may correct in his assessment as to what occurred. yes you can find blotchy toning on these, however there are couple things that stand out on a second look to me. the most prominent is how the toning blends in. it looks washed out. second even in the TV photos I'm not seeing the luster that should be there for a mid AU coin meaning the original skin was removed. was it cleaned harshly? no. should it have received a straight grade? possibly. I don't think you are going to get a better grade on this one. your only chance is if someone will pass it straight

Agreed, TV is very hit or miss. However, IMO blotchy is blotchy and that shows up pretty clearly. In any event, the slab is worthless as is so I'm willing to risk a grading fee for a resubmission. If I get a straight I'm happy, if I get a straight and MS I'd be thrilled. If I get an AU DETAILS then not money well spent.
