Hope this is the right forum for this question. I see some coins for sale with Grellman tags. I can figure out some of the information, but the rest is Greek to me. What is M-LDS (b)? Recal? I also don't understand CUM 10/06. He lists 60/55 - seems like it would be either MS or AU. Can somebody explain how to decode these tags? Thanks in advance.

M-LDS - I would guess middle to late die state

(B) - could be stage b? Part of the die state.

CUM 10/06 - may reference location and date of attribution?

60/55 - likely net grade 'sharpness'/'net'

I don't know anything about this, just guessing.

N-3 is the variety: Newcomb 3 (R1)

M-LDS (b) is the die state: Middle-Late Die State (Noyes Die State B)

PCX = likely a price code

Recol = The coin has been recolored (artificially toned)

CVM = Chris Victor-McCawley (EAC member/dealer: Grellman-McCawley and Frisco Mint)

10/06 = date coin was acquired from (or by) Chris = October 2006

60/55 = EAC grade. The coin has a technical (sharpness) grade of 60 - Uncirculated, but has been net graded to 55 for one reason or another.

Broadly generalizing here, but an EAC 60 coin is usually approximately equivalent to a TPG MS63 coin.

I have sent several coins to him to attribute. Gives the coin more credibility when trying to sell it if its a rarer die variety.

Paralyse knocks it out of the ballpark, a perfect reading/ID of everything on the tag. Beat me to it by a couple of hours.

Nice explanation, clear and concise.

I found two sales from 2006 by Chris McCawley, I don't believe the coin is listed in either sale, one is the EAC in May, 2006 the other was the Evan L. Kopald FPL both have 1852 N3 coins in them in a similar grade, but neither quite match up to this card description.

Blastenpene4 do you have an image of the coin that goes with this ticket by chance?

I'll have to hunt it up westcoin. I see these tags from time to time and wanted the secret decoder ring. For all I knew it decoded to "Drink Ovaltine."

Yes excellent decoding work @para. I wonder if you could comment a little bit farther about price codes as I see them from time to time on flips.

Quote:
PCX = likely a price code

Does each letter correspond to a number? If so, does a specific letter correspond to the same number for the entirety of a dealer's stock? So, for the above price code, if we pretend that P = 1, C = 2, and X = 3, then would a different coin from CVM that was $311, be coded as "XPP"?

Finally, if asking these question is like asking a magician how they do a trick, then that's fine. I'm not looking for secret info here.

Happy to help! I have a few Grellman cards with some of my coins.

Also @Blastenpene - nice reference...

It is likely just one of their inventory coins, hence the price code. If you visit their booth at a show, you can see these cards with the coins to see if that is the case.

@Spence, to use an example, you can use a mnemonic like GREAT COINS = the numbers 1-9 and 0

GTN = $159
RTNN = $29.95 (or $2,995)
GTNNT = $159.95 (or $15,995)
TCS = $560

You can use this sort of code to track acquisition dates, cost/purchase price, and sale price, among other things. It's commonly used in sales when you need your salespeople or employees to know the margin on an item, but don't want the customer to know what you paid for it; e.g. you bought this large cent for $59 and are asking $99 for it, a customer offers you or your employee $75 - it's easier
to decide if that's an acceptable offer for you if you can just look at the holder, and not have to check your inventory to remember what you're "in" it for, especially when selling several items at once.

My old sales job used "BLACK WHITE" for the mnemonic, so a car with a sticker on it that read "BKTTK" was priced at $15,995.

Hardly can tell it's been recolored. I agree with the 55 EAC grade. A very nice coin!
