Could be just some kind of die damage as Feeder Finger Damage on Lincoln cents are mostly on the reverse side of the coins pertaining to the reverse die is the anvil where the planchet sits before striking.
Dearborn thanks , that' what I knew from Coop, and the reason I posted was that I had never seen it myself on the obverse , and he said mostly on the reverse .
I thought the same at first. But the "damage" does not go over the hair, it looks as if it is only in the fields which would be the highest part of the die.
Coinfrog , I though the same when I first time saw it but then I notice that the lower part of the cut or scratch was at the same level as the field and the higher part was over the field without going over the hair .
Damage to the die, feeder finger or not, would show as a raised anomaly on the coin itself. These appear to be recessed areas. If not damage after the coin was struck , these recessed areas could have been on the planchet before strike.
