This penny is kinda cool looking. It's like it is better quality than a normal cent but not quite the same shine as a proof. However on the face and the right of the obverse it looks like it's got good toning that almost makes it look proof like. No idea how long I've had this but I ran across a writing about a special strike coin and am wondering others thoughts on this.

You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning every day for a week than finding any 1964 SMS coin.

It's not an SMS, sorry.

Ok so is it a regular strike or a proof then? It doesn't look like either of them to me. I have mint sets and proof sets of 64's. so I can easily compare them and it doesn't look the same as either so I'm confused

It's just a regular BU strike. They are plentiful in this condition. I have literally a bucket of 64 and 64D I give away to kids. They all look around your condition or better than yours.

Regular strike - looks nothing like a proof, and is certainly not an SMS.

I've been asked often..."what are you 8 years old?"
I'll email you my address.

Very much agree - if memory serves me correctly there were only 10 of the 1964 "SMS" sets struck at the Philadelphia mint.

Not sure, Chris Welch donated like 25-30 rolls of them after he went through them for varieties. All BU. I carded them all to take to shows and give away to kids.
