Yet another oddity. I have a couple of Apollo facing coins from Miletos in Ionia, and though the lion looking back at the sun/star on the reverse of this one is similar, Apollo is rather different. Instead of a recognisable face of Apollo, this coin has an almost alien appearance as seen below.

Apollo-As-An-Alien-Entity?
Initially I thought it might be an unusual wear pattern, or maybe not Apollo at all. (bucranium?) However during a search I found a similar Apollo coin in the Olympus Numismatik Auction #8 - lot 326. Deppert-Lippitz 586ff (apollo right).

The coin in question.
Apollo-As-An-Alien-Entity?
Miletos, Ionia. 259-246 BC.
Obverse: Laureate, three-quarter facing head of Apollo; head turned slightly left. Reverse: Lion standing right, head reverted; star above. Uncertain magistrate name in exergue. Bronze. Diameter: 9 mm. Weight: 1.2 gr.
Reference: Cf. Deppert-Lippitz #600-632. Uncertain magistrate name.

Has anyone else come across a strange rendition of Apollo like this?

That is odd--looks to me like Apollo was a Texas Longhorns fan.

That portrait(?) is quite bizarre, Jim. The term "highly stylized" doesn't begin to address this strange interpretation. It's the kinda thing that makes you tip your head to the side in some vain attempt to get a better perspective. Interesting coin!

Yes.

It is indeed, Mike and caused a fair bit of head scratching. I guess the saving grace was finding the Olympus Numismatik coin, verifying that there was another coin with a similar "portrait".
