What error? Your "floating thumb" looks like circulation damage to the coin.

and AU58BN... Why would someone send this coin to PCGS?
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

What would motivate someone to send this common coin in for grading?

As noted more than once on the Coin Community Forum, submitting coins for grading can be an impulse act for some collectors--especially those relatively new to coin collecting. For some, the idea of having 'your' coin officially slabbed is quite seductive.

A check of the certification number shows that the coin was graded AU58.

Coin grading and error attribution are two separate TPG services, each with their own fees.

The "floating thumb" is just damage. You should've ask on here first, before sending it in, to a TPG.

As nfine said, coin grading and error attributions are two separate services.
