So everyone at work makes fun of me for collecting because I am constantly changing out $1 star notes when I do the morning drawer counts. Coworker asked me today..."Hey man can you exchange a dime for me since the coke machine won't take this dirty one for some reason" I love old dirty 1963 dimes

Don't fell bad, I am in the same boat. But what people don't understand is that you can't go wrong with collecting money.

Now that's a good quote for a signature, Grace! (see below) I hope you don't mind, and I did properly attribute it... Quote: atlas580: "you can't go wrong with collecting money." Sorry, yes you can: HSN, National Collectors Mint, Obama-stickered coins, gold-plated/colorized/hologrammed coins, SGS slabs on ebay, Chinese fakes, etc. etc. That's why this forum's byline is: Education is the key to collector success!PS: I got two silver Dimes in change on this Easter Sunday!

I love old dirty 1963 dimes Do vending machines normally reject the old silver coins in the US?
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Vending machines typically measure the electrical signature of a coin, rejecting it if it does not meet the specs of circulating coinage. This method disallows silver coinage, foreign compositions, and slugs(the round metal objects, not the slimy garden critters ).

G'day, quote: "This method disallows silver coinage, foreign compositions, and slugs(the round metal objects, not the slimy garden critters)." - so "the slimy garden critters" are allowed ? How strange. But I suppose it is an additional incentive to be vigiliant in the garden.

Quote: Do vending machines normally reject the old silver coins in the US? Yes because they have the wrong electromagnetic signature and they weigh too much to be a "valid" coin. Since they are out of spec, they are rejected. Back in 196 they had real problems with it. Back then the machines didn't measure electromagnetic signatures (other than using a magnet to check for steel slugs) but they did measure diameter, thickness and weight fairly closely. The problem was you coudset them for silver and they would reject the new clad coins, or you could set them for clad and they would reject the silver coins which still made up the bulk of coins in circulation. Or you could broaden the tolerances so much that theywould accept both. . . and about any other foreign coin people choose to put in that was close in size and/or weight.
