Hello all, I just finished posting in the new members section... but what actually got me in here was that I found what might be a mint error coin, and I'm hoping you nice folks here will tell me I can quit my day job. Anyway... it's a 1977 S dime which somehow escaped and made it into circulation. What's really odd though is the fact that it is bubbled and has gouges through it. These gouges are pressed into it, making the the opposite side bulge slightly. I'd normally think that this was post-mint damage, except that the pattern shows through the bubbles instead of the bubbles eliminating the details of the strike. So Also even though the coin itself is bent due to the damage of the gouges, the reeding is still straight up and down and not distorted at all, which I'd expect it would be if it were damaged later. (Sorry, my camera isn't good enough to pick up the reeding.) All in all, I think I've got an interesting coin if nothing else, but I've never had a coin graded or anything like that so advice on whether to do so and how would be much appreciated. SAM, please don't quit your day job. What you have is simply a damaged dime. How it was damaged, I can't tell you. That dime and another $1.15 will get you a cup of coffee on your way to work. Please don't shoot the messenger, Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the community S.A.M., Your Dime is a great example of a B.U. coin ( beat up) and definately not a minting error, sorry for the bad news. ~ Jim

1) it is not a 1977-S dime, it is a 77-D. Any S mint clad dime would be a proof and this is obviously a business strike. 2) it is just a damaged coin, not an error 3)

and hope you enjoy our community! with the others--that dime saw the business end of a few tools. Still, it never hurts to ask, people are helpful here.

Hi, Hi and Welcome,
I strongly lean toward the coin having spent some time on a parking lot and having been hit several times. Sorry it's not an error but it is surely damaged.
Thanks, BVill
