Unsure what the D is on top of as some angles it looks like an S and other angles it looks like a small D.

Looks to be some split plating in the immediate vicinity of the mint mark. This exposes the coin's zinc core and zinc rot begins. This is not uncommon with '80s and '90s zinc core memorial cents.

Thank you all for your help.
I've been getting boxes of pennies from the bank, pulling the pre 1982 pennies and putting the others back into service, except for the unusual ones.
Knowing about zinc rot will help a great deal as my unusual penny supply has been getting quite big. Cheers!
