Nicks on collar and shoulder hold this to MS-63 for me.

Too bad the engraver left a to-scale newspaper on Monticello's steps. Other than that, very nice coin--I'm thinking MS64.

I want to give it 64 but those scratches on the jaw line, cheek to neck, and other significant marks on the obverse are really distracting. The strike is strong tho and the toning and eye appeal is really nice.

I'll say MS-64.
Errers and Varietys.

I think it could pull a 64. The challenging thing about grading coins from pictures on this site is that when you blow a picture up to the size of an ashtray, every little tick is more pronounced that what you may observe in hand with a 5x loupe. There is no substitute for in hand grading under proper lighting and the best we can do is provide a subjective opinion based upon the quality of the photographs provided. I would like to see a better closeup of that area on the steps. It is possible that even with a die chip, the steps are unbroken.

Thanks for everybody's replies. Picked it up pretty cheap at my LCS - I think it was 8 bucks. Quote: @MisterT: " I would like to see a better closeup of that area on the steps." That's about the best I can do with my camera - I don't have a microscope.

You can pick up a clip-on plastic magnifier on Amazon (or anywhere really) for about $8. I've gotten good results with that setup using an ordinary iPad camera.

I don't have an Ipad - I use a Nikon L840. At 16MP set on the "Closeup" feature it works pretty good for coins. I just have to make a stand for it as any kind of movement will blur the picture a little bit.

Oh! =) Well, you've already got the nuclear option for coin photography. Have you considered just turning the coin vertical and placing the camera on a flat surface for stability? Assuming your light source can be pointed sideways.

Quote: Have you considered just turning the coin vertical and placing the camera on a flat surface for stability? Oh Jeez, Honestly I never thought of that! I feel like Homer Simpson - DOH! I will try that next time, I imagine if I get the lighting right it should work - I'll start practicing............Thanks.
