How & why were these National banks printing currency? It doesn't make any sense to me, it seems like it'd be costly & complicated. Thanks in advance.

The history of national banks is somewhat complicated, and you can read extensively about it on Google or other online sources. But to answer your question narrowly, these banks did not print their own notes - this was all done under the aegis of the Treasury Department in Washington.

Short answer is it was done to increase the money supply and develop confidence in the local National banking system following the Civil War. The first notes were originally printed
By the American Bank Note Company. Later notes were printed by The Bureau of Engraving and Printing. They were never printed by the local banks. The only things added by the local banks were the signatures of the President and cashier by either hand, rubber stamped or by overprinting (large notes only. The small notes signatures were all done by the BEP).
