Hi all,
I've recently inherited a coin collection from my mother-in-law following her death. I'm kind of fascinated by it all but I feel that wont last. Really I just want to make sure I sell the coins without getting ripped off. So I intend finding out as much as I can so I can sort the wheat from the chaff. Any advice would be welcome. I have various British silver coins - half crowns, shillings, sixpence threepence. I understand that pre 1947 the coins have intrinsic silver value and the silver content varies by age. Also depending on condition, individual coins may be worth more than the silver value. So Ill go through them first. Do you guys advise selling privately, or through a dealer? whats a good place to find an honest dealer/collector?

Hello & from Tennessee, USA ... If you are familiar with ebay, you can start your research by using ebay's "SOLD ITEMS" selection, under the "CATEGORY" section (left hand column of page) / in the list of "SHOW ONLY" section...simply search for your specific coin, & on the selected page, scroll down to the 'sold items' selection ... bear in mind that the condition of any coin affects the collector value ... worn coins being worth far less than those showing more detail ...
...https://en.numista.com/. is a website where you can research information on your coins details, such as metal content/composition, weight, diameter, etc. ...
...www.ngccoin.com...has a world coin price guide that may be helpful to you, but, again, you'll need to know the grade / condition of your coin ...
there is a good online coin grading guide, so:
...www.pcgs.com/photograde ... can help in this respect ...
...lastly, you can post pictures here (one coin at a time) & ask for help / opinions on the coin's condition & grade (www.coincommunity.com/forum/forum.asp?forum_id=7) ... be sure that your images are sharp, showing obverse & reverse, & rim (if any damage)...
...there's a fount of knowledge here & lots of folk willing to help ... just ask ...
...you can sell your coins here after you've posted 250 times...

Good morning Windypops and welcome to the forum. You might find your local reference library has a copy of Spink's "Coins of England and the UK", most authoritative but real Anorak territory and not the easiest book to trawl through. Token Publishing's "Coin Year Book" is very good and worth getting if you take the hobby up. Both these books will tell you what to expect to PAY for a coin so are good for insurance purposes should you decide to keep anything. A dealer has to make a profit so will only ever give you between half and two thirds of what anything you want to sell is worth, and then only if they want it! Some coins might have slight variations in the designs. A few might be pretty scarce. Half the fun of this hobby is the research cos it's got lots of fascinating rabbit holes to dive into. Good luck and best wishes!
