I'm a little puzzled by this one, but I think it must be an FS-101 that's just a little hard to attribute due to die fatigue and circulation flattening. Split serifs can be seen best on the feet of the T and R and the tops of the U in TRUST. The spread still looks a little off, but since it's quite close to the appearance of FS-101 and there are no other doubled dies known for this date, I assume that's what it has to be. It does look like FS-101. It's a nice DDO.

Thanks Errers! Glad to get another set of eyes on it. Seemed like it had to be, but just looked a little off for some reason for FS-101.

I don't think this is FS-101, the doubling is a tad weaker and is in a different direction.
It may be the series doubling. The CONECA master list it notes that it also affects TRUST: "Light spread on Y of LIBERTY with rotation on I of IN, TRUST, and E and T of LIBERTY."

@Tanman thanks for the reply! I was wondering if it could be the WSDO-001, but the listing didn't include any pictures of TRUST, so it was hard to be sure. It doesn't look like a perfect match for the few pictures I saw for the WSDO either, though. I'll try to get a few more pictures soon.

If that represents the series doubling, then it shouldn't be hard to dig up some examples on TrueView. Will look at that tomorrow after some coffee.

I've never found one with doubling like this in several hundred 1972s hunted, but I don't know how many hubs were effected by the series doubling or if it literally affected all the hubs in the series. I kind of suspect based on my own experience that it isn't the series doubling, though.

Your half dollar looks like the CONECA listed 72 SDO-001 (series doubling), not the 72 DDO-001 (FS101)...note the difference between the spread on the R's of TRUST. Attached photos for the 72 SDO-001 and the 72 DDO-001 are from my collection.

Thanks Atrox! That settles it definitively. About how rare are the SDOs in your experience? I'm kind of surprised I've never encountered one before.

@dearborn thanks, but seems to be the series doubling rather than a true DDO. Still gonna keep it as it's still pretty rare in my experience.
