So I've gotten a few of these over time. Just ended up with an Ike bicentennial dollar gold plated. Is there any value in these things? Or just pure novelty?

I liberated a few from "American Currencies" collectors items. Spent them.

...reminicent of the old scam, gold-plating a 'V' nickle (without 'cents') to pass it off as a $5 gold piece ... the old "racketeer nickle" ...

Yeah those gold plated coins/medals are a big rip off in my opinion, saw a TV ad just a few days ago, to "honor" the gold buffalo, a gold plated one for just $..., the thin layer of gold on such novelties is worth just a few cents or less, local coin stores don't want them. Colorized coins are also not worth their cost but some have fun with them.

Most "racketeer" nickels are not plated gold, were made later years to look like gold to fool and/or sell to collectors. A real racketeer nickel was found in Deadwood South Dakota during an archaeological dig.
