I am trying to get my modern Kennedy halves collection completed and I was looking over the mintage figures for the clad and silver proofs from 2010-2023. All of these proofs appear to be low mintage and the cost is reflective of that. I didn't have a problem paying $30 each for the silver proofs from 2010-2019 with the exception of the 2012s which was key a few years ago. Now the key appears to be the 2023s silver proof. It bothered me at the time to spend $25 per coin for the clad proofs so I didn't collect those. Now I am trying to complete the set up to date and I realize that I have no choice but to bite the bullet on the clad junk. I have found some bargains on some of them and I continue to gobble up what I can when I spot them below market value. Only 9 more clad proofs and 3 silver proofs left to go to get me up to date. I'm not doing the enhanced, reverse proofs, or other specialized halves though.

This set has a great deal of potential. In addition to the low mintage coins of the last couple decades, many of the older coins are pretty tough in chBU and Gem proof condition. There are a lot of overlooked tough coins in the series. Things everyone takes for granted like a nice chBU '80-D without shallow scrapes on the reverse are very tough. The series is very long now which can be as much a detriment to being collected as encouragement. Even if all the coins were easy it still requires patience to find so many coins.

Few people realize that most of the entire mintage of some of these coins is gone now and the survivors tend to all be VF/ XF.

I usually wait until a new issue is three years old before buying it for my collection because prices tend to drop. But now days with these lower mintages this is hardly a sure thing. One of these days prices of the new coins might just keep going up.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I had the same thought about the clad proofs. Hoping that after a few years they would come down in price, but that really hasn't happened yet. I sort of liken the key and semi key Kennedy's to that of the decade or so run of Indian cents where most of the 1860's and 1870's are key or semi key. Still this modern stuff will never compare to the classics, but I will continue to try to keep my set up to date. A little over 200 Kennedy's so far.

I sure hope that it does - now that I have my Dansco set complete all with BU coins. and another complete set in OGP.
