Am I trying to convince myself this is a Crosslet 4 or does anyone else see it?

Thanks for the reply, I am looking for opinions on whether or not the 4 is a Crosslet.

I can only see the Crosslet under certain light conditions.

Could it just be worn or is it a well placed mark?

To me it appears that there is a pit/blow/indent just at the point of where the crosslet would be. May have pushed some of the metal towards the 4. Obverse appears to be harshly cleaned/scrapped. Sorry, can't make up my mind either way.

Many people don't know it, but there are many distinctions other than the figure «4» between these two varieties.

For example, the sword tip is not the same. The problem with your token is that it's far too worn to determine anything, let alone photographically. Sorry.

I'm sorry if my English isn't perfect... I'm learning a little more every day.
