Hello Steve, I don't mean to sound obnoxious, however, asking how much you should pay for a '48 half is like asking how much should I pay for a Honda? Until you submit scans of the coin so a general consensus can tell you the grade, then the value can be determined. Once the value is determined then an approximate price may be suggested to you as what you should pay. So my friend you still have some homework to do on your end of the scale before we can give you some advice! However, we'll be patiently awaiting your reply. Glenn Pinto

It is hard to tell with pictures of the coin but if you look in The Charlton Canadian coins catalogue, Depending on the variety and condition, this coin worth between 125$ in F-12 condition and can go up as 2000$ in MS-65 This is one 50 cent that worth being in collection. otherwise I'm not a professional but if this can help you ... look in internet for similar item like ebay or Colonial acres coin , or Gatewest coin to have a idee for the value

I know Glen will agree with this , but according to Haxby it is $75 in vg 225.00 in au for a coin that has a mintage of 38000. This is a crazy low price for silver key date, at any grade, but stolen in the higher grades.

How much are they asking for the piece? Do you know them? Do they have a return policy? Local shop? If the price is right, I'd go for it. With that low of mintage, it gets my vote.

I think we should wish stevemetchill, a nice friendly Welcome to the Coin Community, first And, yes Steve, we should have some pics, before we can give you a grade, and yes, this is a good key date to have in any collection.

If your looking to buy a key date like that, I'd recommend buying one that's certified. Canadian coins have now been heavily counterfeited by the Chinese so that many previously rare early coins are readily available so beware! I don't mind spending to get that hard to find coin, but I expect to get what I pay for. ~ JimI guess I need to figure out how to use the ebay link thing.. [eBayItem]370182388404[/eBayItem]

thanks for the reply. I can't post a picture, I don't know how. i did see a fake silver dollar and it looked too good. this is local private sale in a small city so I could track him down if it was a fake. what I was looking for was a range high-low. the coin looks good and he is asking $165.00 still thinking......

Perhaps you can purchase this with return privilege, and submit it to ICCS for authentication & grading? If it comes back as a counterfeit, get your money back. If the seller is legitimate he'll gladly go along with your deal. The longer he owned the coin, the better the chances that it's the real deal.~ Jim

I bought one of these a few years ago, ICCS graded MS-63. I recall paying around $400 or so, I forget the actual number because it was part of a few coins I bought off a dealer. Now I just need to get a 1948 $1 in the same grade or better!
