weakly magnetic, so I figure it's cast iron
heavily knurled, tapered edge
looks old, says MC on one side and 343 on the other

That looks like a lead seal for a railroad car --? My first guess Michigan Central - which would be more likely if this was found in the area of Michigan :)

There with "M.P" were thought to be Missouri Pacific seal.
