I'm quite excited about this one. I have been hunting a 1954-S DDR for a few months now. You can see the doubled steps between the base of the Monticello building, and the NT of the word Monticello. The coin is BU with a really pleasing toning. Obviously a very late die state, with considerable metal flow lines and progressive indirect design transfer.

Reference material: Wexler on BVC, Variety Vista, PCGS

My coin on the left; PCGS on the right.

Thanks, guys. =) It was a fun digital hunt.

My pics really don't do it justice. The seller is obviously using some kind of pro-grade equipment:

1954-S-Jefferson-Nickel-FS-801.
1954-S-Jefferson-Nickel-FS-801.
I wish my images were half that nice. On his pictures, you can even see the die scratch marker that runs along the top of the coin, above Jefferson's head. The luster, color, and toning of the nickel are also much more lifelike.

Very cool! Man, that is a late die stage! How was it listed?

It was listed as an ordinary 1954-S Jefferson nickel, although the seller did call out the PIDT. I just chewed through all 600 listings for 1954-S on ebay, examining all the reverses, until I found that one.

For whatever reason, the San Francisco mint really ran their dies into the ground in 1954. That was also the year for the S/D over-mintmark. Might be an interesting bit of history there. Most of the coins shown on PCGS are very late die state, with all sorts of orange peel and surface warping.
