I was asked to comment. This is either widely offset incuse Machine Doubling or ejection impact doubling. The significant amount of offset and the presence of two extra letters suggests the latter. Ejection impact doubling has been detected in several other ATB Quarters, including George Rogers Clark. I've written up several examples in Coin World. Ejection impact doubling occurs when a newly-struck coin is thrust back into the face of the retreating hammer die, which in this case was the reverse die. Incontrovertible examples feature greater offset, a significant rotation, or both.

I agree with ejection impact doubling.

I've seen this a number of times on the ATB Quarters. Though I haven't seen it tripled before, just doubled. A good, unusual example of this issue.

Thanks Mike! Greatly appreciate the quick response. I guess I need to subscribe to Coin World magazine. The link you had in your response took me to Amazon but they do not sell the subscription anymore. If you have a link to your article you wrote in Coin World please send it to me.

Coin World only makes a small percentage of my articles available to the general public. Here's an earlier treatment: https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...-to-mak.html

Thanks for the article Mr. Diamond!!! John1 thanks for the link to the Ejection Impact Doubling. Now my next and last question is what shall I do with this coin? Is there any value to a collector?

Put it in a 2x2 and label it correctly. As to value,

I had heard of ejection impact doubling (in this case tripling?) but still don't quite understand how it happens. So is it sort of the same as bag marks, except the coin is banged against the die instead of other coins in the hopper (or wherever else)?
